Even more memories of Maidstone and its people by its people

Dave Martin Maidstone I remember it well: I enjoyed going to the Tudor House on a Sunday and also the star when Steve Maxted use to do his show.I also remember playing on the Reeds football grounds with a hot cup of tea at the end of the game.I think that was the highlite of the game.

Shirley Hope Maidstone I remember it well: To Jim Yarwood do you remember Roger & Billy Mcnicol Micheal & David Farnham they are my cousins and my dad Claude Farnham worked at the KM for years i worked there as a copy holder at week street and larkfield sadly Roger was killed in a car crash 20 years ago, uncle Jack Farnham was there too it was a real family work place.

Dave Stubberfield Maidstone I remember it well: There were cows in Mote Park in the last war. my Dad and some of his mates from Langley went there one night and got a cow and killed it cut it up in to four put it in the four prams that they had and walked back to Langley with it and all the folks of langley had meat for a few days as it was hard to get any extra even the village copper from leeds had some.

Police corruption again eh! Dave

george parish Country: Egypt Maidstone I remember it well: Jerry Maycock Country: I also went to Hill Place, when Mr Wilson died and the government gave the spy Zarb our school as a payoff, then off to Vinters, the guy that belted Alf (real name) Bert Reid was I believe that bespectacled tough man Trevor Edwards. I used to play alf reid billiards in the Constitutional Club in Tonbridge rd..happy days!

Dave Stubberfield Maidstone I remember it well: Pia's milk bar The Flower pot Cafe and the Fiesta With the big glass front I used to go in there and break open fireworks and put the gun powder in the ash trays and then go outside and stand across the road and sit on the park bench and wait looking through the windows to see the one with the black faces and a look of suprise. The old tea bar at the M&D bus station, the star ball room on a sat night the yanks from west malling and the Snow drops the Yank MP.s called the snow drops as all the Yanks were white but the snowdrops were all Black with white helmets . The Gin Palace at the bottom of week street so called as they had a womans only bar from the older days where the carriers used the public bar. Women could not cross the road as it was about a foot deep in horse mess and had to be carried across and Lyons tea house after reading this web page I have gone back to the age of sixteen and the pubs so many you could stay drunk all your life and not use the same one twice and after that a long walk home to Langley as the last bus was at ten at night.

Sharon Maidstone I remember it well: Sharon - Maidstone can anybody remenber The Fountain Pub , Week Street , Maidstone , it was an Irish pub , can anybody recall a regular called Jim 'Blondie' Pye , who lived in King Street , would of been from 1960's until his death in 1977.

Malia Rachele

La Spezia, 3 Giugno 2011, 11 a.m. (in England)

It was really very kind of you to me around your beautiful country, and to make me feel so at ease. I see Maidstone (by computer). I love reading, affectionately “Story and Memorys“ in This Web site, full immersion in Maidstone-I-remember-it well- Magic formula is -Maidstone I-remember.it-well-in this moment, wind improviser, he gave me a surprise.... open my window, and tell me a story legendary, Robin Hood, Lady Godiva, in the distance, golden coach, Dickens Festival. When happen to be, an united country... Now maybe in your green garden, in the morning, in the spring , your voice come in this magic moment (it's true), Maidstone people, in my house, in my desk, sense of smell, sweet smelling (fragrant wood) -Smell this flower- Thanks, and Fragrant wood.....bud of rose, I remember again, the children Were Playng in the garden, a whirl of events... around the Kent...

(Sorry for my english), xxx for Maidstone. Yours sincerely, Malia Rachele.

Jim Yarwood Maidstone I remember it well: Shirley Hope: I remember your dad very well, he was a real gentleman, and of course Jack, sadly a lost breed these days! And of course your cousins Roger and Billy McNicol. Great, great times then. I worked for a number of years with Dave Farnham but sadly when the strike of 83/84 happened it all broke up and people had to pursue other jobs. I left the KM but returned lots of years later and currently work in the ad studio, plus also contribute with motorcycle features and road testing. Technology has changed the business beyond all recognition and sadly 18 months ago the proprietors decided to shut the press down and as a consequence the printing of the papers is now farmed out. I do remember you, as like yourself I started at Week Street as a Linotype operator until the miners' strike in the early 70s and they they shipped us all over to Larkfield where they had a generator and, with constant electricity, that stopped the linotypes from solidfying up! I occasionally bump into some of the guys from the KM and to a man everyone enjoyed working there in the 'good times'!

Sharon sharonkemp46@yahoo.co.uk Maidstone I remember it well: Does anybody have photos of The Fountain Pub which was in Week Street , there was a little fountain in the window . Mainly used by Irish folk , any info about this pub or the regulars that used it i would be most grateful . Thanks

joanna strugglengrunt@hotmail.co.uk Maidstone I remember it well: i am wondering if anyone on here could help me i am trying to trace my family tree and it is all based in maidstone. does anyone remember their parents or grandparents telling them about a little shop on st peters street in the 1900-1940 owned by the Browne family i would be very gratefull.

Andy Fletcher Maidstone I remember it well: Somebody asked me this and nobody can tell me !. What shop/place was situated at the bottom corner of Gabriels Hill around the early to mid 70's. Not the Hubble and Freeman side, but the other side. Please can somebody help me ?.

Sharon Maidstone I remember it well: The shop was called Classics i can remember getting my ears pierced then . It was a jewellery shop but sold other nic nacs .

Well done Sharon

Bernie Martin Country: Australia Maidstone I remember it well: To anyone interested in catching up with me on my visit to England including Maidstone , I will be in Maidstone from about the 20th of July until I wear out my welcome. Does anyone know or remember Don Preen , Robin Brown & Dave Farrow ? Looking forward to seeing old friends , school mates and anyone who remembers me. Am also looking for somewhere to park a caravan for a few days. Bernie Martin.

Megan Maidstone I remember it well: I remember running from the post office in King St down through the alley bt Vivish and Bakers to the bottom of Gabriels Hill to catch the trolly bus to school in Loose. When we got to the Wheatsheaf, always if I was late, the poles would fall off and the conductor seem to take ages to get them working again which in turn made me late for school.

Anthony O'Leary Maidstone I remember it well: I had two stints at St francis 1954/1959 Juniors & 1962/1963 Seniors. Remember most of the teachers names and what disciplinarians they were.As other teachers have been previously named, who remembers Mr Martin ? Some of the pupils names ring a bell, especially the McKenna's ( Bakery - Holland Road ). Also the name Paul Sturgeon rings a bell, as does Peter Capon (author of this site . No doubt some of our numbers have passed on, but will be remembered. The good old days ! Or were they ? To everyone, who might remember me, here's to longevity ! Cheers.

Would we ever forget you Anthony. Didn't you join the scouts at some stage for a while as well. Where the heck are you now. Regards Peter

Beau Kent Country: Thailand Maidstone I remember it well: Bill Kent my brother and Bill Ivy the only world champ Maidstone has had, lots of memories I also sang in a local band in the sixties The Cortinas, does everyone know the only honour Miadstone has for there only world champion is a plaque in Maidstone Museum, its a disgrace any ideas, living in Thailand now but love to help

Terry McKenna Maidstone I remember it well: Nice to hear from Anthony (Tony) O'Leary. Terry McKenna here. I do so remember Bill Ivy: Great guy and indeed a world champion. He used to work for Chisholms (Honda Agents I think!!)and I often used to see him when I worked at Godfrey Holmes; next door to our bakery, before GH moved to Granville Road! I spent time with him and his "mates" John Surtees AND Mike Hailwood at Brands Hatch and was very sad when he was killed in Germany in practice. Drop me a line sometime on my email terrymckenna178@btinternet.com ok. Peter has established a lovely site here so write some more AND as he says: Where do you live these days then? I'm still around and living in Bristol: Well they say the good die young so on that theory I shall live to be about 120!! Ha Ha

Boo Jones Country: Thailand Maidstone I remember it well: Boo Jones Maidstone I remember it well, the names that keep popping up Barry Hynes and Freddie Burgess, if you remember me of course from Devon Rd, e/mail me living Thailand and another name Brian Trigg my address is jjphuket@yahoo.com

Nick Mendes Maidstone I remember it well: My dad, Sydney, was a conductor on the trolleybuses from 1949 until they finished in 1967 and was often recognised years later by people who'd travelled to school on his bus. When he was on a late shift he'd have to walk home from the depot with all his equipment and takings, much to my mother's consternation, but in those days it was completely safe. On his days off he'd often take me for a bus ride (free of course) and I remember being hoisted into the driver's cab of a trolley at "The Bull" one time.

I was at MGS from 1965 to 1972 - recently came across some clips on you tube of a film made in those days by Martin Passmore, by the way. I was on the MGS Transport Society tour of the trolley system and depot just before closure, and rode in the final procession (on 54 - the one with all the Corporation staff - just ahead of the mayoral party on 72). I lived on the Hackney Road motor bus route and as a small boy was fascinated by the passing buses - got to know them all individually and what advertisements each carried. I remember getting very excited when I saw a bus with a "bandage" - just the white background before the painters did the lettering.

Before going to MGS I travelled to school in Sevenoaks for 3 years on the M & D no 9 bus on my own every day, including every day through the severe winter of 1962/3, open platforms and all! The buses always got through, even though one day it took until lunch-time, and the headmaster sent me back home again as soon as I got there!

Boo Jones Country: Thailand Maidstone I remember it well: Boo Jones hello again glad to hear that Tony remembered Bill Ivy and yes you are correct he did work for Chisholms top of Stone St and raced 50cc Itoms for the brothers, it just makes me so angry that there is no monument for him, my first job in Maidstone was at Redhill Motor cycles on the broadway, so of course see the bikers all the time, great times hey come on Barry Hynes where are you.

Hi Peter

I wonder if you would be kind enough to post this on your site in the appropriate place. I would be very grateful as it would mean so much to my Mum.

Kind regards

Wendy

Post

My name is Wendy

I am trying to trace a a lady who's maiden name was Wade( Janet)Janet Wade originated from Maidstone in the 1950s. I know she had at least one brother who worked in one of the paper mills. Janet moved to Smallfield Hospital(near Horley) in 1955 where she worked in catering with my mother who was at that time Patricia Foulston (known as Pat). They worked together until 1957 when Janet moved to be with her mother Newton Abbot Devon. They lost touch with each other.

If anyone has any information(even where she lived or went to school would be helpful as mum can't remember) I would be grateful as I know my mother would very much like to contact her.

Many thanks Wendy

mike lang Maidstone I remember it well: I grew up in nearby Ightham and would travel on the bus or in my late dad's new Ford Cortina many times to the cinemas of Maidstone. It is as far as I know the only town to have lost two ABC cinemas to fire.My favourite was the Palace Theatre 1908, becoming a cinema, first run by Union in 1935. All the early Norman Wisdom films were shown there, with huge queues round the building.Closed on Oct 19th 1957. As in many cases the land it was on was worth more than the cinema that stood on it. The fleapit, the best in Kent opened as The Electic and renamed the Medina in 1938.The new owners refurbished it and gave it the new name of the Regal. It had an American on the street style paybox and I remember dragging my rather posh late mum there to see Kirk Douglas as Ulysses (1954). The cinema shut on the 18th March 1957.These and other kent cinemas are in my book Cine Variety free on google now Just search for Cine Variety. Mike Lang, 6/7/11

Blimey Mike I'm impressed. As a kid I hated going into the flea-pit, thought that there were rats running around on the floor hence I sat with my feet curled up on the seat.

Boo Jones Country: Thailand Maidstone I remember it well: Hi The Viginians, great times was that when Frank and Jenny ran the bar or after when Danny Peacock and family ran it, I played there with my brother Bill Kent, Frank was a mate of mine so we just did it for a laugh, sad to se its no longer a pub, hows the Motley Hall doing or what ever its called, when Frank bought that for a song off Courage and Barclays it was in a state but after it was refurbished wow what a bar, so take care and be lucky cheers Boo.

Helen Daniels Maidstone I remember it well: Dear Peter

First, may I say that I really love to read your website, especially marvelling at the quite remarkable memory of Les Huggins, who has written a number of earlier posts and has reminded me of the names of my teachers at St Paul's Infants School, although I did remember one of them who also taught me and my brother - Gladys Dove - who happened to be our Auntie (by marriage). It seems Les Huggins was two years above me at North Borough School and in the same class as Pat Mahoney, my best friend Janice's older sister. Janice Mahoney was in my class all through North Borough and has remained my best friend to this day. I do recognise some of the other names Les mentions that were in his year - such as Pat Carr, who was a friend of Pat Mahoney. Like Les Huggins, but obviously in different years, both my brother, Gordon Fullagar (born 1942) and I (born 1948) attended St Paul's Infants, followed by North Borough and finally Vinters (Boys' and Girls' respectively) in the 1950s - an d in my case the early 60s. Although we do not personally remember Les Huggins we realise that he was obviously a younger brother of Mavis (who was in my brother's class) and also related to Mary and Donald (in my year at North Borough). Now for the mind boggling-bit(for us anyway!) - we believe we are related to Les Huggins and his family! By chance recently (well, actually by me Googling the name 'BARNES')I came upon a family tree on a website on the internet in the name of Grahame Huggins and as a result my brother and I realise that we are actually related to Les Huggins and his family through our mother, whose maiden name was BARNES. Our shared ancestor would appear to be HORACE BARNES. Would it be possible please to be put in touch with Les Huggins via e-mail? We would really appreciate it if this was possible, especially as my brother, Gordon, is very keen on family history and could probably help Grahame Huggins to expand some of the ancestors' names on his BARNES' family tree. Looking forward to your reply ... Best wishes, Helen Daniels (nee Fullagar) 07/07/2011

Just let me know which page Les is on and I will find his mail address. Regards Peter

Helen Daniels Maidstone I remember it well: This is a message for Doug Lindsay about Maidstone Zoo: Further to an earlier answer, my brother, Gordon, (who is now 69) remembers riding on the little train once when he was a boy but unfortunately cannot remember any details. So, at least it must have existed if THREE people remember it! Helen (nee Fullagar)

Helen Daniels Maidstone I remember it well: The first part of this message is especially for Wendy Gearing (now Ashbee) who posted before about Vinters Girls School - and that she could not remember the name of the French teacher when she was there: the teacher who taught French when I attended Vinters Girls in the early 60s was Miss Dibble. My memories of her - she loved lavender (the colour and the plant), wore her grey?/white? hair in a bun, was quite strict, very prim and proper and loved to chat to us girls, giving us advice on life. As far as French was concerned she seemed to spent most of the lessons telling us girls all about her long holidays in South Africa (with her sister, I seem to remember) and showing us colourful photographs of the fantastic huge and exotic flowers that she had seen there. All very entertaining and interesting but a bit unfortunate for those us that really wanted to learn French! To this day I am only able to count up to 20 (with a little difficulty afte r 10) and recite the names of farmyard animals or give basic commands in French like "open the window" and "shut the door"!!!!

Some of the other teachers I remember are: Miss Brett, the PE teacher; Miss Collins (Geography) was nice - firm but friendly; Miss Dowling who addressed us individually in a booming voice as "Young Woman" and strode about purposefully (every class, including ours could be seen literally shivering with nerves when standing in a perfectly and unnaturally orderly line in the corridor outside the Science Lab awaiting her arrival to take a class); Mrs Grant (who taught English) was very kind and patient and tried to give us good advice for the future - she was my final form teacher. Although she never actually did it, Miss Morphew, the Headmistress, threatened to have me expelled once because I was persistently late for school. This habit had started when I attended my junior school - North Borough - where they eventuallly decided to give up scolding me and make me the "Late Monitor" instead for a while in my final year there - needless to say I did not collect many names in my book, since everyone had arrived at school l ong before I did!! Unfortunately, I am afraid that I have never got over the habit of being late. Helen Daniels (nee Fullagar) ------------------------------

glen Allen Maidstone I remember it well: Does anyone remember seeing chairmen of the board at the tudor house,I was only 11yrs at the time and was taken by John Miller( we both came from Langley)sadly John is not with us any longer. John had an older brother ,Pete who introduced me to real soul music.

Terry McKenna Maidstone I remember it well: Hi Helen Daniels. If you still want Les Huggins email address and Peter hasn't sent it to you I have it. If you contact Peter then he may give you my own email address and I can pass it on ok. That means that Les's personal details are not made public and I know Peter wont give it out. Hope that is useful to you. I knew Les Huggins too as did my late lifetime friend Trevor Miles.

Terry Mckenna Maidstone I remember it well: To Glen Allen. "Soul" music: Now you're talking proper music there!! I was a DJ for about 20 years in Bristol (where I still live) and the Northern Soul Nights I did every now and then were brilliant nights!! Soul developed from the wonderful Motown Records (Smokey Robinson etc) and I used to buy Imports from the States to play. The best label of all was the Yellow AND Blue Stax label. Not just the music but the "dance" routines were fascinating to watch! Bristol (where I live) has always had a great music scene: Bands like Massive Attack and Portishead were innovative with their electronic styles and are still about. Mind you we like diversity too!! Adge Cutler and The Wurzels AND Fred Wedlock (The Oldest Swinger in Town) that also hit the BIG time. Sadly Adge and Fred are no longer with us BUT The Wurzels are still performing!! A bit like Maidstone in the 60s who had bands like Vanity Fair AND Chicory Tip, who I think now perform with a couple from Eddison Lighthouse in and around Maidstone and Kent in general. Just realised how "Old" I sound!! Well I am, before Mr Capon reminds you that I am!!

I can confirm he is old. Peter

peggy musson Maidstone I remember it well: does any one remember Mr Hosea at vinters I remember him enthralling us of his escape along a tunnel during the war, they discarded clothing as they went which unfortunately caused a build up of water they had to retrace their steps to dislodge it I know this experience was turned into a book as I saw it being sold in smiths wish I had bought a copy!!

Nic James Country: France Maidstone I remember it well: I used to go for swimming lessons at Maidstone baths, what i remember the most is the smell of all the breweries...all gone now sadly

hannah simpson Country: Bhutan Maidstone I remember it well: before i moved to buton, one remembers attending invicta with an astonishing fellow by the name of laura willment. she wasn't as intellectual as myself, but we still got on like a house on fire. maidstone was a jolly good town, you should hibernate there in the winter months. cheerio, good day.

Andy Fletcher Maidstone I remember it well: To Glen Allen : I also lived in Langley back then (my mum still does) and remember Johnny Miller. I still keep in touch with Steve Bowles and a couple of others, so I might ask them if they saw that group.

peter dean Maidstone I remember it well: Hi Boo its peter dean here, do you remember my wife Jean working for Frank at the Kings Arms, she was the first barmaid at the Motley Hall, anycase Tim my brother says he would love to hear from you you can call me on 07802 329405 or email pdean@sandhurst.co.uk get in touch.

freddie burgess Maidstone I remember it well: I remember it well going to the Regal in earl st we knew it as the bug hutch we used to go with all the lads one would pay to get in then open the emergency exit by the ladies toilet and let the rest of the lads in it looked funny seeing all the lads coming out from the ladies toilet. there was also a time when the lads used to go in with elastic bands and staples and fire the staples at the two metal clocks either side of the screen this caused mayhem as ernie the usher would come down with his torch looking for the culprits who put the elastic bands round their wrists and lose the staples we did have some laughs.it was also the time of the rock and roll shows at the Granada little richard gene vincent and many others happy days freddie burgess

David Ring Maidstone I remember it well: Maidstone Sea Cadet HQ (T.S.Scott) was on the right hand side of Medway Street looking from the swimming baths.
