Even more memories of Maidstone and its people

peter Dean Maidstone I remember it well: To Bernie Martin, You did ask about Roger Arnold i saw him about six years ago he was recovering from a heart attack. Saw Calvert yesterday he said do you remember the games of spoof in the Tavern. I can remember playing it with George Phippen which was always hillarious. Calvert said he had just been to the Funeral of Ian Thorn he asked me to ask you if you remembered him

freddie burgess Maidstone I remember it well: to peter dean was the ian thorn who died the same one who used to get down the wall opposite rootes in a 1957 chevrolet bel air with melvyn jestin in the early 1960s?

Bernie Martin Country: Australia Maidstone I remember it well: To Peter Dean,Roger Arnold always used to be so slim & fit would never have picked him as a heart attack candidate.Tell Calvert I can't place Ian Thorn,do remember playing spoof in the Tavern,we would play after hours with the "Old Bill" but we used codes so they always lost & bought the rounds. On Friends Reunited I saw a photo of Calvert from 2006,he looked really good ,immacuately dressed as always,he was the only bloke who could go to work [scaffolding] in a white shirt & come home spotless, maybe that was because I did all the work.heard somewhere that Melvyn was on holiday care of Her Majesty. Keep up the great work .Bernie.

Carole Bowles nee Vernau Country: Australia Maidstone I remember it well: message for Bernie. I remember Melvyn very well. I used to cycle to my grandmothers at Coxheath, as he used to chase me home and scare the hell out of me, then throw fire crackers through our letterbox!! Glad to hear he's having a nice holiday. By the way John Walsh in your photo, is my brother-in-law. I am enjoying this site so much.

Matt Maidstone I remember it well: Hi I work for Eric Snowball he is still going strong,PPB another band he was in has reformed and have started to gig again. Information for Bernie Martin-The Zephys rhythm guitarist and singer was Norman Hoskins and Shelia baker.

Hi Matt are you Eric's son? I played for a time with the Country Cousins he was always a rebel ask him if he remembers Pete Capon

Rosemary Brocklehurst Maidstone I remember it well: Maidstone. I was at the Girls Technical High School after a brief period at Westborough. The High School is now Invicta Grammar School. I worked for the Kent Messenger and was trained as a reporter in 1969-70. Does anyone else remember the KM or working on it? My family lived in Bower Place when we first moved there in 1963. We then moved next to the Bull Inn at Linton. Paul Franczak was at the Maidstone Technical Boys School in the 1960s. Anyone remember him?

About thirty years ago I lived in Mersham quite near Bilsington Priory. I sat for many hours listening to Mr P. Boorman talking about the old days. He was a true gent and I have written about him elsewhere on this site. Sadly his daughter Mary died a couple of three years ago bless her.

Rosemary Brocklehurst Maidstone I remember it well: Hi Peggy. I was at the Tech School too, at the end of Amy Thomas's time as headmistress. Scary woman. I remember Miss Price (Pansy Price we nicknamed her)very well.

Sorry Rosemary I have been away in Spain for a few days hence the delay in updating the site. Peter

Jim Yarwood Maidstone I remember it well: Rosemary Brocklehurst. Jim Yarwood here. I have worked on and off at the Kent Messenger since 1970. Edwin Boorman (Prat Boorman's son) recently passed over the reigns to his daughter Geraldine who now runs the show! It's changed an awful lot over the last few years. I'm currently working in the ad studio with a few strings to my bow doing motorcyle-related features/articles. Guess you were at the Week Street sight? I was there for a short while until the 3-day week of the early 70s made the move over to Larkfield (where they had a generator enabling the Linotype machines to be able to function). I stayed until 1981, then left and worked in London for a while before setting up my business in Maidstone, which then suffered in the first of the modern-day recessions. I then went back to work for the KM. Were you there in the Peter Edwards'/Jim Thompson days?

barry hynes Maidstone I remember it well: Hello Matt ive just been talking to Tony Bathurst in Tescos. He is still playing with old band and also goes on the continent with band.Regards Barry

b Martin Country: Australia Maidstone I remember it well: To anyone who worked at the old Kent Messenger, do you remember Barbara Bragg [Bebee]she emigrated to Australia with my brother Paul Martin who I think also worked there for awhile. They split up after awhile in Australia but Bebee has remained great friends with me,my sister & all of our family. Thanks Matt for the names of the Zephy's I have recently contacted Eric & will catch up with him in July/August. Thanks for your email Barry Hynes it will be great to catch up with Tony Bathurst. Regards,Bernie Martin.

PHILIP SAUNDERS Maidstone I remember it well: I rememer it so well, my training at Linton hospital. the only male with 12 females, It was so sad to see the hospital being demolished. Such a happy time of my life those two years.

Lyn Page Country: Spain Maidstone I remember it well: I was born and grew up in Maidstone and remember the Royal Star Hotel, where I saw Acker Bilk and many live groups, the Fiesta coffee bar where I met Eden Kane ! The milk bar. I remember a cinema in Gabriels Hill which later became Sainsburys, a cinema in King Street (Ritz) and the Flea Pit in Earl Street where when you sat down there was not always a seat. I worked in the GPO in King Street as a telephonist and remeber a short cut through Pads Hole to Gabriels hill by the Len river (All disappeared under Chequers Centre) I remember Bushy Ring a real character of Maidstone, seen pushing his pram around collecting (rag n bones). I remember the Snooker Hall in Week Street, the Gin Palace, the wood yard by the bridge and the cobbled street going under the bridge with the bus drivers cafe. It`s great reading other peoples memories as there is so much that has been forgotten keep it up.

Hi Lyn there is a page dedicated to the old cinemas on the site. Peter

Jerry Maycock Country: South Africa Maidstone I remember it well: I was at Sutton Valance Primary 1960-61 then Hill Place Prep on Queens Avenue 61-67 when I went to MGS. Heads at Hill Pace were Dr Swinburn, Col Beckwith and Lt Col Fisher, a truly great guy with his lovely wife Susan and daughter Nicola. My class teacher was Mrs Ryan and I recall Mr Delarue for music. MGS teachers were Mr McMillan, Burnett, Melly,Scott, Diamond, Stewart, Knight,Newman, Newcombe, Ryan, Miss Wise plus a host I can't remember today but no doubt will later. I enjoyed MGS, yes Knocker Knight was a tyrant but he was always fair from my experiences and I had quite a few punishments getting 3 detentions a term meant often seeing Mr Moody or Dr.Pettit for a swish or three! Maidstone was a fun place to grow up in late 60s early 70s,The Bridge Inn, Moat Park, the old swimming pool, bunking off to watch cricket, trams, the Cannon, the old Fire Station in the middle of town. Playing in the then quarries off Willington Street and Chapman Avenu e towards Ofham, now house galore. Yes Maidstone I loved you then and respect you now.

pete varney Maidstone I remember it well: hey roger, pete varney here, bet u thought u would never hear that name again.hows it going, when i left maidstone moved to selling nr. faversham from there to the navy [12yrs] went to live abroad for 30 more yrs. now back living in west sussex.yes i do remember freds shed, [great times]can u remember christine morgan, megan davies, linda senior,do u still live in maidstone? could go on forever.regards pete.

freddie burgess Maidstone I remember it well: pete varney what a blast from the past tried to get in touch via sandynpete@homecall.co.uk but had no luck. i also live in west sussex since 1967 left maidstone with the regent oil co at aylesford to work in southwick terminal nr brighton driving tankers i left there in 1976 to go into the motor industry.i now have a car site in shoreham by sea if you want to contact me my e mail address is lighthousecarcentre@yahoo.co.uk .it would be nice to talk over old times. i do remember linda senior i went with her when i was 15 but she packed me in because i was too slow!!!!!!. I often think of the old days when you used to come out on the back of my Norton, in fact I've got a photo of us at Bob Harveys cafe, Lenham, with cedric smith, bob glenday, ray trigg, in 1960. Is your sister Jume still ok? I remember coming round your house, with your lodger pearl "all over us"!!!!! If any of the other wall boy bikers are around from 1959 - 1963, would love to hear from you. Especially if you are still biking.

Marian Davey Country: Australia Maidstone I remember it well: After leaving Maidstone Technical High School for Girls in 1963 at age 16 (much to the disgust of the Headmistress Miss Thomas, a regular tyrant who firmly believed a gal should remain at her school until age 18 and be grateful to graduate as a nurse, teacher or typist!) I enjoyed full time employment as a clerk at Foster Clark's and gained my business and secretarial qualifications by attending evening classes at Maidstone Technical College in Tonbridge Road. I have vivid memories of pounding away on a heavy manual typewriter to the tune of The William Tell Overture, one keystroke to each beat, and at the end of each phrase a voice booming: CARRIAGE RETURN!!! I also remember the Pitman Shorthand teacher being excellent, so much so that I decided to tackle the advanced class, which proved to be a good decision, as my fast shorthand skill gave me an advantage when applying for higher paid secretarial jobs. My dad always said be one of the few and not one of the many and i was able to be one of the few due to the high standard of education I received at the College.

Carole Bowles Country: Australia Maidstone I remember it well: Reading all the emails about Maidstone Girl's Tech. has bought back so many memories for me. I used to think I was the only one that was so miserable there, and I always thought that Amy had it in for me, but now I know I was not alone and she treated everyone the same. I too left very early (15)much to Amy's disgust, mainly because I was so miserable, and I got a very good job at Bracher Son & Miskin, which was in Star House. Message for Bernie Martin. I asked my brother Phil a question the other day, and he pretended he could not remember, but said to ask you. The question is: Who painted the canon white?

So thats why you all left blighty was it?

Kevin Scott Maidstone I remember it well: As i was reading through the Vinters Boys "Incident" with Alf Read, it made me smile as i also remember it well as i happened to be the boy that he was looking for to start with, he came to see me as he had heard that i was going to be involved in a fight after school! The boy with his hands in his pockets was stood next to me in the changing rooms Read told him to take his hands out of his pockets, the boy then rubbed his hands together and this earned him a clip around the ear from Read! The boy came back with a punch that put Read to the floor minus his glasses. Happy days!!

That wasn't anything to do with Rod Pendry was it Kevin?

ronald or rumpaneaves neaves E-mail Address: rooneyneaves@hotmail.co.uk Maidstone I remember it well: hi peter realy good website, would it be possible to give my email address to Peter Honey.I have been chatting with him thanks to you and your great site.

Brenda Mason nee Dealing Maidstone I remember it well: I too went to Maidstone Tech 1946-49 as was terrified of Miss thomas & her horrid false toothy grin--she loved her power over us girls --astrek of cruelty i think-- I loved Saturdays in Maidstone Lyons at lunch times, the Baths in the afternoon The Central or the Ritz cinema in the evening--- and wrestling matches I watched during the week with my friend Joan-- Miss Thomas would have had a fit if she'd known

lesley shaffer Country: United States Maidstone I remember it well: Brenda Dealing,I lived in London road east also, my name was Mcculloch, you gave me your bike and school uniforms, as I also went to the Girl's Tech. We all remember Amy Thomas, how many lives did she try to ruin. College here in the U.S. was so different. My mom died in 2005, and my younger sister Pat in 1975. I come to the U.K. quite a lot and visit my younger brother. I remember your mother very well, do you remember Ruby Stratford she must have been in your year at the Tech. I now live in Ohio, after moving around all over the world because of my husbands job. I still love to go to Maidstone when I come to England it will always be home to me. I love this web site.

debbie smith (nee mccarton) Maidstone I remember it well: my memories are a little more recent. I left my stockport home in 1977 age 17 to start my ophthalmic nurse training at KCOAH. It was one of the happiest times of my life. I remember Sr Bell our tutor with such affection, and all the surgeons, My Grundy, Mr Davies, Mr Munton and Mr Ormarod. I would love to know how others are, Theresa Hatcher, Wendy Mchenry Sue ...? Anne...? I diverted from nursing and am now an optometrist and have returned north.

Freddie Burgess Maidstone I remember it well: Maidstone I remember it well . Very good website Peter ,don't think I ever met you but you are doing a cracking job Freddie burgess

Roger Banfield Maidstone I remember it well: Hi Pete. Well I never....what a fantastic blast from the past. So unexpected and who would have believed that you and Freddie B are almost neighbours. We have got so much to talk about!

I moved away from Maidstone for a few years but returned in early 1980 and now live in Loose on the Loose Road.

I think that Freddie's idea of a SBS OAP's reunion is great so let's encourage some of the old boys out of their armchairs. What about some of these names who I know are definitely still about; Paul Kingsland, Gerry Bovis, Peter Brooker??? Never did know what happened to Vic Dillon, Malcolm Eiffert and Dave Brown but they might surface?

It's a great shame they pulled down "Fred's Shed", we could have met there.

Really looking forward to meeting up!

Ps. I remember you borrowing five Players Weights from me when we were in Arthur's Cafe. Well I gave up smoking but you still owe me. Fivepence Ha'penny plus fifty three years interest!

By the way wife told me that I do not remember any of the girls you and Freddie have mentioned!

Hi Roger if you mean Peter Brooker from Sheals Crescent I am afraid he is no longer with us.

Sheila Watts Maidstone I remember it well: does anyone remember the 'rag and bone' place on Brunswick Street. Segoe and Jeffries was the name.

Peter Varney Maidstone I remember it well: Pete Varney, maidstone i remember it well:hey Roger, long time ago was Freds shed but happy days, great idea about a reunion.about me, spent a few yrs. in the navy then went to live abroad for loads of yrs.{Portugal and Spain}.If i paid back the ammount of ciggies i bummed out of people i,d be a pauper now~~~~great to hear from u,hope we can get together soon, you can always buy a packet, Marlboro nowadays mate.right old family man now,5 grownup kids,12granchildren and 4 great grand children. regards Pete.

Darren Vidler Maidstone I remember it well: Roger B mentioned a Miss Brooker was she any relation to The Brookers who had a Grocery Shop in Peel Street? I'm related through cousin Richard William Vidler who married Elizabeth Bridgland whose mothers maiden name was Margaret Brooker I have no connection personally with Maidstone but my family The Vidlers lived in Maidstone for many years in fact running The Sawmill at Baltic Wharf(where The Law Courts are)and at Princes Wharf West Borough. The Family ran it up to about 1900 but apparently the area lay disused and were pulled down in 1960. Anyone know any more please Thanks Darren Vidler

Peter Dack Country: Denmark Maidstone I remember it well: I used to play in the Maidstone based band called 'Kishna Kudu' Does anybody remember us? Does anybody have any posters, tickets or other things with the band name on them? I'm very interested!! Our drummer, Brian, left to join 'Chicory Tip' and did very well with ' Son of my Father'. I went to Denmark in 1970 and I've been here ever since. i still play in a band and I've now been playing for 49 years and to think, it all started in Maidstone. Thank you Maidstone!

Peter Dack Country: Denmark Maidstone I remember it well: I was born in Maidstone in 1949. after a couple of moves my parents ended up in Bearsted where I lived until I left home and went to Denmark in 1970. I went to East Bourough primary school and I still remember getting caned by the headmaster when I was only about 7 years old. After we moved I ended up at North Bourough Primary. Mr Jones was a great guy and the headmaster loved music and dancing. Failed my 11 plus and got sent to Vinters Boys' Secondary Modern on Huntsman's Lane. I was there from 1961 until 1965.There wasn't anything 'modern' about that school. I hated it. The Headmaster Alf Read also caned me. I must have been a very naughty boy!!! Huggins the metalwork teacher was a real sadist and loved knocking us boys around the head for the slightest thing. 'Shank' Sheldon was great but Mr Dearn really took it out on those boys he didn't like! Mr Lewer 'Lenny' Lewer was King of the Dog and Bear at Lenham, he lived there actually, and 'Pop Graham was a great history teacher. Mr MacKay taught us loads of science. The French teacher, a lady, was nicknamed 'Fifi'. It must have been a tough job for her teaching all those teenage boys!! One day Mr. Kirby (english teacher)told me that I was wasting their time and wasting my own time and my best bet would be to leave school, at that time I was 15 years of age. It didn't take me many minutes to make up my mind to leave that dump! Thank you Mr Kirby!! My best memory however is of another pupil named Keith Parkes. He played guitar and he could play all the new pop songs. He inspired me to take up guitar playing and I soon got into a local band called 'The Rimshots' after that I joined 'Krishna Kudu' and even though I'm 62 years of age I still play in a band in Denmark and I love it.I've been playing for 49 years! Thank you Keith Parkes!! And I'll just tell all those awful teachers from Vinters, if they're still alive, that I've had a great life, I became a teacher in Denmark and swore that I would never be like those terrible teachers from Vinters Boys'. I've got a wonderful family, children, grandchildren, all that I could wish for!

Between leaving school and going to Denmark (5 years) I worked as a trainee salesman at Times Furnishing at the top of Week Street, then at Dunnings, in the carpet dept. Mr Smith was a great boss, then I did management training at Sainsbury's in Gabiels Hill. Mr. Gregory was a strict but fair manager and there were lots of very sweet young female assistants employed there!! Those were the days! I always visit Maidstone when I'm in England. Great memories of the place.

Brian Carlick Maidstone I remember it well: I have a photo of my Primary School, St. Nicholas (St Nicholas Church Hall, Poplar Grove) 1956 I would like to upload if you could advise on this.

First make in into a small file and put it on desktop. E-mail me at my personal address which is on the bottome of the page enclosing the attachment (which will be the photo) Hope this helps Brian

Ken Allen Maidstone I remember it well: Hi Peter Honey. Good to see you're still about. Yes I did have a yellow Messerschmitt. I had joined the RAF as an apprentice in '57 and in those 1st couple years I saw the world as nobody had ever seen the world. Firstly Bexhill then a unit near Detling hence I lived at home in York Rd. After getting married (50 yrs next year) I moved to married quarters at West Malling. I occassionaly exchage emails with Gillian Cooper in Sth Africa. My email is virkie@tpg.com.au. Would like to hear from you. Ken

Ken Allen Country: Australia Maidstone I remember it well: Hi Peter Honey & Rumpa Neaves. it was Rumpa having a Messerschmitt that influenced me to buy one myself - my 1st 'all-weather' vehicle.

Richard Emery Country: Australia Maidstone I remember it well: Sheila Watts: We owned the Forge across the road to Jeffries in Brunswick Street East for many years, it was a father and son business and both named Stan the old man was a rag and bone man to the end but young Stan Jeffries was a very good carpenter and a very accomplished artist although you would never have known & I still have one of his oil painting of a bowl of roses. We also ran a timber business at the Forge and as their Rag & Bone business started to flounder they bought the timber business which eventually took over from the rag and bones. They also bought the house next door and for a while run it as an antique shop. Young Stan lived in Loose and and had a son who went to Maidstone Grammar but I do not know what happened to him.

Keith Ray Maidstone I remember it well: I've never actually been to Maidstone, but when I was young I knew Major William (Bill) Pitt quite well, as he used to fish the same places myself and my Father fished in Scotland in the early 1960s. Bill Pitt was quite a character, and I recall he drove a green Daimler Majestic Major Reg D22. He always travelled with Major Bill Clowes (I always wondered about their relationship!) who was a distant relative of mine (my Mother's second cousin). Bill Pitt always dressed about 50 years out of date! We might say 'immaculate', I'd say slightly weird!

Living in the country as I did for many years back in the late sixtys and early seventys I came into contact with many old eccentrics and you are right Major Pitt did dress out of step perhaps. I do remember many of the local high society dressing in plus fours as there everyday dress. Major Pitt carried a silver topped cane walking stick. He seemed to have many cars and one that I remember was a Triumph sports car.
