Richard Carden Maidstone I remember it well: I was in Maidstone hospital in 1952 I had bronchail pneumonia and later was sent to the Fant Lane Isolation Hospital There I met my a lady who became my mother in law in 1961 having met her daughter when I was 12. I ask my wife Jane would she marry me when I was 14

Are you related to the Cardens who had a paper and sweet shop in Bower Lane?

Richard Carden Maidstone I remember it well: I started West Borough Primary in 1945 and moved to Secondary the same year Mr Diamond started as Head Mr Pheby wos the senior teacher and if you did not stand quick enough when some one came into the class, you most certainly did the next time We started to go over to Oakwood house and as some one else remarks in all weathers We had a young farmers club and came in weekends to feed the pigs and chickens I lived up by Barming Heath and would walk to school, and, if my Mum was home back for lunch I started an apprenticeship at Drake and Fletchers as an electrician in 1955 We did not have much in those days ,but what we did have we appreciated.

barry hynes Maidstone I remember it well: hello richard did your family also have a shop at cumberland avenue in shepway? i clearly remember a jeff carden that run the shop he was good with all us kids regards barry

Bernie Martin Country: Australia Maidstone I remember it well: Is Mike Matthews any relation to Kathleen Matthews who went to school with me at St Francis I have posted a photo of her & I as House Captains some where on the web page. Hoping to visit the UK next year and would love to catch up with any who remembers me.

barry hynes Maidstone I remember it well: hello bernie good to see you here how are things?I dont see a lot of the old crowd nowdays but bump into stormy jones now and again he donsent seem to change much.I will let you know who else i bump into.regards barry

Jim Yarwood Maidstone I remember it well: Peter Dean: I think "Jango" emigrated to Oz, perhaps someone will know for definate. Peter Pia good to see your entry on the site. Vividly remember your dad's coffee bar, best in town! Barry (Hynes) I bumped into Kim Humphries a few months ago, it was him and a couple of mates that put the plaque up to commemorate the G-Ranch. Terry (McKenna) did you really finish all 3 KM 50-mile walks, bet you couldn't do it now!!!!

Terry McKenna Maidstone I remember it well: First things first: Jim (Yarwood)!! Yes I really did finish ALL 3. Not only that, after the 3rd one I went straight to Frittenden football club and played 90 minutes and on the Sunday afternoon I played for Tekkol AND scored a hat-trick!! It would probably take me a week to walk 50 miles these days!! Didn't use Pia's coffee bar too much cos of those ROCKERS!! The Cheese and Grill was our preferred coffee bar in Week street (or any pub in my case)!! Trevor, myself, John Sarjeant and Ray Farmer also played snooker, table tennis, 5 aside football and 10 Pin Bowling in Chatham. Another favourite pastime was of course the "Girls" at the Howard De Walden youth club. Didn't have your "Maidstone Set" cards; just had to rely on my good looks and charm!! Lol. In the "bad" weather Trevor (Miles) and myself would spend hours in Trevor's dad (Ron) shed trying to listen to Radio Luxembourg on an old VALVE radio when we could get reception!! The Dansette record player was meant to play 8 records (45's) at a time but rarely did!! Some times I even managed to do some homework!! And of course we went to the pictures TWICE a week. We always found something to do. Nick (Who's surname escapes me and who lived in Wheeler Street) used to look after the welfare of those magnificent shire greys (He was the blacksmith at Fremlins) had a passion for racing steam (Yes Steam) lorries somewhere near Paddock wood and I used to shovel the coal for him perched precariously on the back!! My mum made the sandwiches and he provided the beer!! The snooker and table tennis were played at the Old Civil Service club in King street at the end of Albion Place and then at Springfield Kent Council club. My dad Mac was very good at darts and I used to play if they were short in the Greyhound Pub team!! Oh happy memories.

maxine crittenden powolny Maidstone I remember it well: i went 2 school at tea pot lane aylesford

peter dean Maidstone I remember it well: maidstone i remember it well. hello bernie martin i dont know if you remember me as our little crowd were abit younger, we used to stroll up from the fiesta to the londern tavern and listen to your crowd having a laugh there use to be tony buckingham, stormy, george phiben, tony bathurst also your brother paul. when i left school i actually had a couple of games for the tavern you were the keeper i ended up playing for howard de walden later the rose, kings arms and lashings. two very good friends of mine who knew you are tony weston ex Gills and John (angus) Ring, both of them said they would like to hear from you email if you want on pdean@sandhurst.co.uk

Barry Jones Maidstone I remember it well: I first started work at International Stores in Week Street in 1967. I used to stand carving ham in full view of the front window and loads of school friends and enemies used to bang on the window and take the p---. Embarrasing or what?

mm sorry about that Barry Only kidding it wasn't me

Peter Brown Maidstone I remember it well: Ronnie and I ran the Greyhound at the crossroads between Wheeler street and holland road. We were the last tenants at the Greyhound and we loved the pub very much. It was very sad indeed to see it go and we have many fond memories.

les huggins Maidstone I remember it well: Nice to hear that Trevor Miles is still about. I am looking forward to hearing his memories of Vinters.

Trevor, Keith (Kidso) Horton, David Pell and myself were good mates in 3A at Vinters in 1959.

We used to be a "laugh a minute". Anything from calling a certain person (who shall remain anonymous) "ape-man" to pinching Mr Pickstons(RE teacher) pipe and waltzing around the school pretending to smoke it, and imitating his voice.

I remember Mr Kirby (English Teacher) actually giving me a cigarette at the end of term due to a wager he had lost.

Then there was Mr Huggins throwing a marking gauge at me, missing, and scratching a nearby, Norman Kleiser. If it had hit me it would have taken my eye out easily. Happy Days!!

Mr Huggins also took us for Technical Drawing. I was known as "Name-sake", Kidso was known as Horion, due to a lapse in spelling his name.

We used to get "old-stock" sweets from Charlie Hood in Union Street, penny drinks and ice-lollies from a shop in Wheeler Street and stale buns from Telfords in Union Street. Sometimes, Lindridges in Week Street would provide us with some "Specked-fruit"

Saturday morning pictures at the Ritz in King Street provided light relief from a week of school. It used to be sixpence to get in.

In the afternoon we used to go to the Athletic ground to watch Maidstone United. This was a place where you met all your other mates and even saw your neighbours enjoying the football.

malcolm sands Maidstone I remember it well: I REMEMBER CLASS 144 244 AND ON AT WESTBOROUGH SCHOOL TONBRIDGE ROAD MAIDSTONE IN 1964 ON PLEASE E MAIL MALCOLMSANDS@BTINTERNET.COM

Judy Hill (was Tassell) Maidstone I remember it well: Westborough School took us to Maidstone Pool for weekly lessons. This was the early '50s. Oh the joy of the warm water in the little pool and the twin terrors of M. Hollingsworth and the cold water when you graduated to the big pool- I don't know which I feared most!! Hot orange squash and a 'Sally Lunn' in the little cafe afterwards then the long treck back to school all steamy and decidedly damp.

Judy was Tassell Maidstone I remember it well: The biggest excitement with the trollies was the amazing flashes of electricity coming from the wires whenever there was frost and snow. Next was scaring myself sitting upstairs, at the front, and going down Gabriels Hill - it felt like we were going to take off. Does anybody remember the horrendous queues of traffic trying to get down Stone Street and round Knightrider on Market Day. I worked at Smythe & Draysons timber yards and always had to hop off the bus and run the rest of the way to work. The rest of the week I got off at the Queens Head stop - opp. the cannon (remember that and the aweful toilets underneath)and had the job of buying umpteen 'Danish' from the cake shop that was next to the pub for everyone in the office.

Judy Hill nee Tassell Maidstone I remember it well: Growing up in Maidstone just after the war what I used to like was all the smells. The Breweries when they were 'malting'. Peppermint oil wafting across the river. Timber being machined down by the bridge. Sawdust on the butcher's floor. The electricity place and the swimming pool both had their own individual smells. The river ponged sometimes too. So did the loos under The Cannon in High Street and the ones next to the Fire Station under the Market Buildings. Best of all was the Coffee Shop in Weeks Street. I used to linger there savouring the aroma while my Mum (Gloria nee Dickenson) went in the butchers - I wouldn't go in there - I hated seeing all the rabbits hanging on the rack they looked just like my own pet.

Judy Hill nee Tassell Maidstone I remember it well: My Mum Gloria Marchese (nee Dickenson) grew up living in York Road. She just had to twist a fence rail at the end of her garden and she was in the Park. When she lived there the valley was deeper and mostly covered in braken (all spoilt when they infilled with soil from the leisure centre) and there was a herd of deer. Hunting was allowed and my Grandfather was always writing to the Town Council complaining because animals were regularly shot but not killed outright.

My cousins grew up in the same house and my brother John and I were regular visitors specially for the sledging. We used to tie ropes to the trees at the top of the slope and swing right out over the valley. Every night the Dads used to go out and cut the ropes down because they were frayed so badly - we just thought they were spoilsports.

My Mum remebers Canadian soldiers camped in the park during the war. Incendries were often dropped on them and the surrounding houses.

Terry McKenna Maidstone I remember it well: High Hugh Shannon. There's a name from my past!! How are you fella? I'm still in touch and see Jimmy Yarwood who often comments on these pages. Any idea where Jim Beale is these days, I've been trying to find him for ages (he was J Y's best mate)and I told JY I'd find him!! I always did have a big mouth!! Steven Golding Maidstone I remember it well: Im sure that must be my dads dad, my dad is ron golding from larkfield.

Might be Steven; sure someone will know.

Jim Yarwood Maidstone I remember it well: Hugh, good to hear from you! There's certainly some names in your recollection. Remember well Miss Templeton, had a schoolboy crush on her, she was lovely!! Sadly Steve Avenall was involved in a fatal car crash in the mid-60s with I think three other lads, from memory I think it was in the Bearsted area, perhaps somebody can confirm or correct this. Like most, Harry O'Donnell was a legend and have to thank him for keeping me on the 'straight and narrow' yes hard as nails but I found him totally fair. Haven't seen Kevin Devlin for a number of years, but we used to play in the same football team for a number of seasons. You're right about Paul Stone, his is the Aaron Stone empire. Do you remember the summer your mum and dad kindly took both of us touring all over Scotland in your dad's miniscule A30?! Seems impossible now how 2 adults and 2 kids managed to get all the way up to Scotland and tour! Drop me an email if you want: jgpy@talk21.com

graham(nick) Nicklin Maidstone I remember it well: I attended West Borough infants, juniors and secondary schools from 1951 to 1962 when i left and joined the Royal Navy. I have terrific memories of all three and i have been back to the Juniors and Mr Day was still teaching there he taught my sister and brother,Marilyn and Roger. I was in Detling house and was house captain played football, stool ball and athletics, Mr Jolly took that and Mr Polson lovely lovely people went over to the big school and spent a wonderfull year in Oakwood House Mr Hogarth(a true gentleman although he did cuff me around the ear once but i definitely deserved it.We then had Mrs Loyd domestic science teacher another lovely lady, in fact apart from the odd one or two most of the staff were good in particular Mr Dimond i treasure my book that has his name it was awarded as the Headmasters prize. I think my most memorable day was when i was made Head Boy i just could not believe it, Mr Dimond said to me that it would be a good idea if i got rid of the drainpipe trousers which i did and my mum got me baggier ones which was a good start for when i joined the Navy.I left school in Feb 1962 i was supposed to have stayed in the 5th year until the end of Summer term to take GSE'S a first for a Sec.School. We had our first re-union 4 years ago at Oakwood House organised by Ann Kingshott brilliant they have had a get together every year since the really special one will be next year our 65th birthdays.Sadly some of our dear friends have passed on. I recognised one of my old friends name Phillip Wood not a West Borough but a St Francis he lived near me in the Prefabs on Gatland Estate, his Mum was a lovely Maltese lady. hugh shannon Maidstone I remember it well: Hi Terry.Still in rude health despite numerous lapses.Must be 50 years since we last met.Recall your Mum and Dads Bakery in Holland Road. Also recall your Mum Kathleen? being Mayoress of Maidstone at one time.Bryan Hampshire lived at "Manby" Hook Lane Harrietsham (as a child). My only memory of Jimmy Beale is 78? Holland Rd,which you probably know.We all played footie on the green at the end of Hatherall Road with Jim Yarwood,Trevor Miles and ? Manktelow. All the very best.Hugh.ABACUS

hugh shannon Maidstone I remember it well: Hi Jim its been a long time.Remember we would go to all the Stones home games decked in amber and black scarves and bobble hats and armed with amber and black rattles,("come on you Stones").We always sat at the front of the main stand (flash or what)? I remember you coming to Coxheath when we played footie all day in the cricket field. You were always a solid defender. My football career started at Linton Utd in goal when I was 15.Then Sutton Valence,Tovil and Bridge and finally Hunton Premier Sundays.I retired at 35 having been pole-axed (but fairly)by Dessie Sturgeon of Burham Sports.I then realised I was just too old and didn't need the injury risk. Are you still a Biker these days? I got a Triumph "Cider Tub" but never passed my test.Do you recall Mick Barney (another good friend)and a true bike enthusiast. His first bike was an Ariel Arrow Super Sports avec fairing. His best bike a B.S.A.500 Gold Star. What a machine.Mick sadly passed away some time ago.

Hugh Shannon Maidstone I remember it well: Hi BARRY.I do recall Eddie Gadd (Scottish)? Did he not have a sister Catherine? She always reminded me of Hilda Baker long ago comedienne.also recall John Moore whose only career could be in the Bill.Sorry to hear about your Joyce.I never knew.I remember a pupil Harry Taylor, known as "Frogga" by J.Y. I remember now Joan Coakley for once re-attaching her stocking in front of the whole class.Do these first generation Irish have no standards? Harry O'Donnell was indeed a legend and character to boot.I seem to recall that Peter Capon was known as "Capoff".Someone confirm please.Regards to you and yours.Hugh.

barry hynes Maidstone I remember it well: hi pete, just looking back on some old entries and looking at yours about music.I recently saw johny kibble in town he must be in his early 70s now,i think he was lead singer for the virginians they were good band.I started playing guitar 5 years ago when i was 54.Im no good but i play country that i was bought up with,i play mainly merle haggard he was always my favourite.I remember you playing in the caravell lenham thats going back a bit isnt it.All for now and good new year to you and all all contributers to this site.

Hi Barry the lead singer was Johnny Horton. Did you know I was called Capoff, well I never knew that.

barry hynes Maidstone I remember it well: hi again Capoff is new one on me where did yo get that name from.Johny Kibble was with riversiders not virginians wasnt he but i believe they all played at the kings arms loose.was the drummer adrian had blonde girlfriend.Funny how things come back as we get older bit scary really! regards barry

Apparently that's what Young Hugh Shannon said in the previous article. The drummer of the Virginians was Aden and yes he did have a blonde girl friend called Bev. Bev is still around Maidstone to the best of my knowledge as I have bumped into her on several occasions.

Jonhnny Kibble did play for a time with the Virginians but that was before my time. Later he did a duo cabaret with a guy called Jim (Irish lad) can't recall his surname; I do recall that he had the strongest voice I ever heard and would end on a high note. Unfortunately sometimes he hit the right note and sometimes not and he didn't seem to know when it was right. I must say that when he hit the right note it was truly remarkable Happy New Year Barry

barry hynes Maidstone I remember it well: hi again pete.first let me say sorry for typing errors probs with keyboard didnt realise till i read my piece!!The singer with johny kibble was jim jenkins his brother in law. They did rounds in london for while but didnt get break they needed.John and i worked together ofr fair while he was a bricklayer and i a plasterer.Had some fun with john he certainly was a character.

hugh shannon Maidstone I remember it well: As I recall "Capoff" was used by Mick Bray from Coxheath.
